Vancity Group powers BC's first hydrogen fuel network.

Imagine a future where the air is cleaner, and the vehicles on our roads are powered by a fuel that leaves no harmful emissions behind.

This future is becoming a reality with the H2 Gateway program, an initiative aimed at revolutionizing transportation in British Columbia through the widespread adoption of hydrogen-fueled vehicles. Spearheaded by HTEC and powered by Vancity financing, this project is set to make a significant impact.

Thanks to a Vancity business mortgage, HTEC is taking a giant leap forward with the construction of Western Canada's first green hydrogen liquefier facility. Located on newly acquired land, this state-of-the-art facility will capture by-product hydrogen gas, and convert up to 15 tonnes per day into clean, usable energy. That's enough green hydrogen to fuel a fleet of 300 trucks and 30,000 passenger cars, which will reduce our region’s reliance on fossil fuels.

Did you know?

Hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicles:

  • can drive a range of 500 km+ before refueling
  • only take 3 to 5 minutes to refuel
  • emit nothing but water vapour from the tailpipe

And heavy-duty fuel cell electric trucks:

  • have zero emissions
  • are capable of long range with high efficiency
  • and can operate in extreme weather conditions

“Spurring change for the future”

"Hydrogen holds incredible potential as a cornerstone of our clean energy future,” says Alfred Lee, Climate Finance Manager at Vancity Community Investment Bank (VCIB). “Its versatility and ability to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions make it a game-changer in the transition to sustainable energy."

“Working with HTEC is really exciting because this kind of large, innovative project is spurring change for the future,” adds Sooraj Sara, Vancity’s Community Business Account Manager.

“HTEC’s North Vancouver Clean Liquid Hydrogen Facility is big news for BC and plays an important part in helping us achieve our net-zero goals. We’re grateful to Vancity for their shared vision and collaboration – their support has been instrumental in making this project a reality,” says Melissa Mckinnon, Director, Liquefaction Assets and Partnerships at HTEC.

By financing projects like this one, the Vancity Group is driving the adoption of green solutions that can have a lasting positive impact on our environment and economy.
